This is one of the tougher dates to acquire in Mint State condition.

Many of the surviving coins have come out of Europe over the last 40 years and have what we call the “European” look. These coins are often dingy and dirty looking.

This example is not one of those. This coin is lustrous and beautiful. Clean and frosty examples such as this are elusive and normally sell for a fairly large premium over the uglier coins that are extant.

What I also enjoy about this issue is the price has not climbed higher recently with gold moving up. In other words this coin, which trades around $2,100 in this grade, was bringing this amount when gold was nearly half this price. Many great numismatic coins haven’t yet seen the climb in price with gold moving higher.
